People come to counselling for many different reasons, and they don’t all fall into a neat category, but here are some of them:
Low Self Esteem
Poor body image/eating disorders
Stress at work
Physical problems leading to depression, incl menopause
Lack of hope or motivation
Self medicating with alcohol or other temporary fixes
Loss—divorce, redundancy, change of circumstances
Struggling with these things alone is the loneliest place. Counselling, also referred to as Talking Therapy, offers you a space to say things that you can’t to anyone else and know that you won’t be judged. When you sit with a therapist, their attention is fully and exclusively for you – this is something that we rarely experience, and is why people often struggle with feelings of not being heard or seen. A counsellor creates the space for you to talk and explore your feelings; what may be going on underneath the feelings and how your life experiences have shaped you. Often we carry distorted messages about ourselves from our past, and the skill of the counsellor is in bringing these into awareness and helping you to discover what is holding you back from being the person you want to be.
